For many men, male breasts can be a significant source of low self-esteem and embarrassment. Plenty of male patients come to our office and tell us that they’ve been hesitant to remove their shirts on the beach or become intimate with a partner because they’re unhappy with the way their chest looks.
Why Do Male Breasts Happen?
The appearance of male breasts (also known as gynecomastia) is a condition that occurs as a result of hormones, changes in medication, or the presence of too much glandular tissue around the chest. While many boys and young men temporarily experience breasts – especially during puberty – some men may continue to have male breasts even after they’ve gone through puberty.
Gynecomastia Consultations Available
Since male breasts are often caused by hormonal issues and excess glandular tissue, the issue cannot be solved through diet and exercise alone. Therefore, it’s recommended that these patients undergo gynecomastia surgery in order to remove their breasts for good.
What is Involved in Male Breast Reduction?
Male breast reduction surgery typically follows two steps:
- The removal of glandular tissue, which is often the root cause of male breasts
- Liposuction, which helps to get rid of excess fat that might be located on the chest
In addition to liposuction surgery, your plastic surgeon can sculpt the chest to create the appearance of pecs. The end result is a flatter and more contoured chest, free from the appearance of any male breasts. And because the procedure involves the removal of glandular tissue, the breasts should not return.
