If you’re interested in undergoing a breast augmentation, you may know that one of the most important decisions you can make for your procedure involves which type of breast implants you’ll select. Breast implants can have a significant impact on the size and appearance of your breasts. Some implants are meant to improve the appearance of the cleavage, while others are designed to maintain the breasts’ natural teardrop shape.
Confused about which breast implants you should choose? Here are five frequently asked questions about breast implants:
- What are the most common types of breast implants?
The most common types of breast implants include saline implants, silicone implants, and form-stable implants. The best implants for you will depend on your aesthetic goals and needs.
- What are the differences between these implants?
Saline implants are filled with a salt-water solution, while silicone implants are filled with a firmer silicone gel. Form stable implants – also known as gummy bear implants – are designed in a teardrop shape to mimic the natural shape and feel of breasts.
- What’s the best way to determine my implant size?
Implant size is best determined by talking with your plastic surgeon. Breast size is a very subjective variable. Dr. Coscia will use multiple factors to arrive at your chosen implant volume. Your height, shoulder width, breast position, and desires all factor into this. A very helpful tool is for patients to bring in other post-operative pictures that illustrate their desired size. Temporary sizes are also used during surgery to obtain an immediate illustration of how different implants will look in each patient.
- How can I see how implants will look on my body?
In addition to the methods described above, Dr. Coscia also uses the Mentor breast implant sizing system. Prior to your surgery, you will work with Dr. Coscia and a medical assistant using the Mentor silicone sizers. For this, you will wear a tank top and try on various silicone bra inserts to get an immediate visualization of what your breasts will look like.
- Is there a warranty included with my implants?
All implants include very good warranties that last 10 years or more. Extended warranties are also offered from the implant manufacturer for further coverage even beyond this time.
