Neuromodulators vs. Dermal Fillers
Injectables is a blanket term for facial injections with neuromodulators and dermal fillers. These products offer unique benefits that target your cosmetic concerns.
Botox and Dysport are neuromodulators that contain a neurotoxin called botulinum toxin type A. These injectables target the muscles under the skin responsible for dynamic wrinkles, which form after years of repeated facial expressions that crease the skin. Neuromodulators can treat:
- 11s or vertical lines between the eyebrows.
- Horizontal forehead lines.
- Crow’s feet or wrinkles around the outer eyes.
This class of injectables provides fast results that start to appear a few days after your treatment as the targeted muscle relaxes and smooths overlying skin tissue. Results from Botox or Dysport may last three to five months.
Dermal fillers or facial fillers do as the name suggests; they fill in volume-deficient areas with a synthetic gel. These injectables are best for static wrinkles that develop with age due to loss of collagen and elasticity, excessive sun exposure, genetics, and lifestyle factors. Facial fillers can address the following:
- Facial volume loss
- Moderate-to-severe lines and wrinkles
- Thin lips or lip wrinkles
- Facial scarring
Some dermal fillers are comprised of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your skin and body that decreases with age. Hyaluronic acid injectables offer immediate results that plump up areas of the face. Other facial fillers like Radiesse and Sculptra focus on rebuilding the skin’s structural support by encouraging the body to increase collagen production. Radiesse provides some immediate results with continued improvement, while Sculptra provides gradual results as the body strengthens the treated area. Depending on the type of filler, you may enjoy smoother, more voluminous skin for six months to five years before a maintenance treatment is necessary.
Neuromodulators are best for moderate-to-severe wrinkles caused by muscle movements, and dermal fillers are best for filling in lines, adding facial volume, and lip augmentation.
Benefits of Injectables
Injectables offer immediate or near-immediate results, providing fast facial rejuvenation in time for an event or special occasion. The minimally invasive nature of injectables offers anti-aging results without going under general anesthesia for an invasive face surgery.
Neuromodulators and dermal fillers carry fewer risks than surgical procedures, such as facelift, and do not leave incision lines or scarring behind. There’s no downtime necessary after an injectable treatment, whereas facial plastic surgery often requires one or two weeks off work and up to eight weeks of healing. However, you will need repeat treatments to maintain your youthful appearance.
Injectables can target your unique concerns, from acne scarring on the cheeks to volume loss, lip enhancement, and wrinkles in multiple areas. These injections can also enhance your results from a face procedure, such as smoothing forehead creases after a facelift or eyelid surgery.
How to Choose Your Injector
Your results and safety rely on choosing a certified and experienced injector for your dermal filler, Botox, or Dysport treatment. While it can be tempting to attend a “Botox party” at a hotel or friend’s house, you are more likely to experience adverse events, such as infection and unsatisfactory results. It’s best to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Rudy Coscia, with extensive training and understanding of the facial structure and tissues. Dr. Coscia is dedicated to his patients, ensuring their safety, and providing excellent outcomes.
