These days, it seems as though there are a number of surgical procedures designed to help you achieve a more youthful appearance. Between chin implants, facelifts, and facial injections, it’s no wonder more patients are confused about what’s the best treatment to achieve their desired results.
If you’re bothered by sagging skin or excess fat around the jawline, you may be wondering if you need chin augmentation or a lower facelift. Both of these surgeries are designed to help contour the jawline while reducing the appearance of a double chin (not to mention the dreaded turkey neck). But when it comes down to it, how do you know which procedure is right for you?
Wonder no more because we’re about to take a look!
Chin Augmentation
This surgical procedure has a single purpose: to help provide more structure and definition to the jawline. For example, if you have a weak chin, a chin augmentation helps to highlight the chin and add a bit more “oomph” to the jaw. A chin augmentation is usually performed by adding an implant in the submental tissue, which is located directly underneath the chin.
The best candidates for a chin augmentation are patients who have a weaker jawline or feel like they could benefit from more jawline definition.
Lower Facelift
While a chin augmentation is focused on adding definition to the jawline, a lower facelift is dedicated to minimizing sagging skin and wrinkles in the mid- to- lower facial region. For example, if you have a double chin, turkey neck, or excessive lines around your mouth and cheeks, you could benefit from a lower facelift. This procedure is performed by making small incisions behind the ears and around the hairline, which allows the plastic surgeon to access and pull the muscles taut. Excess skin is removed to help highlight your newly contoured appearance.
The best candidates for a lower facelift are those patients who have sagging skin and excess fat around the chin, jawline and neck. These patients should also exhibit moderate- to- severe signs of aging.
